ΒΡΑΖΙΛΙΑ: Now, you are FUCKED

Brazil: «consensus» bursts

In Rio de Janeiro, 100 thousand people occupied Cinelândia and the main avenues to protest against increases of bus fares, stratospheric costs with the Maracanã stadium and repression of manifestations. In Sao Paulo, other one hundred thousand protesters were the answer to the violent repression of the past 13 Thursday on the demonstration against the increases, which left 55 wounded and 150 detainees. The impressive manifestation paulista occupied both sides of the Avenida Faria Lima, the main commercial artery. It received the solidarity of workers and the population in its path, and went to Government House (Palácio dos Bandeirantes), which had to be closed. Curitiba, Belo Horizonte, Maceió, Belém, Salvador, Porto Alegre also had manifestations. In Brasilia, in protest at increases and works at the stadium Mane Garrincha, students and young people occupied the access ramp to the Planalto Palace and then surrounded the National Congress. In Belo Horizonte there was more tan fifty thousand protesters. Repression was violent and left two seriously wounded youngs.

The main columnist for La Folha de Sao Paulo summed up (18/6): «It seemed all so wonderful in the oasis Brazil and, suddenly, we are reliving the manifestations of Plaza Tahir, in Cairo, so suddenly, without warning, without a crescendo. We were all prisoners of the surprise. From paradise, we slip, as a minimum, to a limbo. What is happening in Brazil? «.

Do not you know it yet? Increases in bus fares were the trigger. The Brazilian passages are among the most expensive in the world ($1.50 in São Paulo). And more than that. Today, there are 13.900 transport units, against 14.100 which had in 2004 in Sao Paulo. From 200 thousand daily travels, there is now 193 thousand: more people traveling worth more expensive, in fewer buses and less travels. The repression against the first demonstrations added another ingredient. Young people took to the streets to pop the Brazilian police state, inherited from the dictatorship military, preserved by «neo-Liberals» and perfected by the PT. Youth went to the street to defend their right to expression most elemental. The demonstrations in some capitals took between 10 and 20 thousand people last week. This week they went from 100,000 in the two major cities (São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro) and ranged around of 50 thousand in other cities. O Estado de Sao Paulo published a map of the demonstrations (http://protestosbr.marcogomes.com/).

Protesters in Sao Paulo marched compact and in perfect calm, ended up with a couple of infiltrated small trouble makers anarchist groups, they knew they had all the exploited population on their side. When we were walking in columns to the concentration point (Largo of Pinheiros), people waved from the windows of the buildings, the bus drivers were sounding their horns in solidarity, the same bus passengers applauded from the windows.

The PT (national Government and intendance of Sao Paulo), the PSDB (Government of the State of São Paulo and Minas Gerais) had to go back: last week called the protesters «hooligans» and instructed the police military to suppress with violence. This week, they are already «protesters who used a legitimate right». The police, this Monday, kept a safe distance in São Paulo and was limited to control the routes of passage. There is no clear data about a repression in Rio de Janeiro (Government of the PMDB, which shares the national Government with the PT), which has been violent. Still, there is a general political step back of the national Government and the States against the strength of mobilization, organized by students and young people (Passe Livre movement), which today (Monday) already counted with the organized participation of labor unions, especially of CONLUTAS. The organization of young people is spectacular. At the paulista demonstration, one of every three demonstrators wore a makeshift banner with their anti-Government protest and claims of all kinds.

It is a revolt against living conditions (wages, working conditions, including means of transport, police state and repression in schools, districts and universities). It is a revolt against the complicity and corruption of all bourgeois parties and the PT. It is a revolt against the systematic favors to the great capital of the PT Government. It has placed the PT, party Government (youth of the PT was in demonstrations, even if it is only a political machine) in a rampant crisis. It is already having an impressive international impact, in the most diverse countries. It is the «revolt of the vinegar» (used to combat the effects of the tear gas and moral effect bombs) and is just taking its first steps. Brazil has entered the path marked out by Turkey, Greece and the Arab countries. Its impact in Latin America will be decisive.
